Energy – How Strong
is Yours?
-Louis Hart
I remember in
my younger days I’d go to sleep late, wake up early and I’d still have so much
energy through the course of the day it would be hard to sit down.
I’d play
basketball before school, we’d wrestle around in the court yard at lunch and
when I got home I’d play all night until the sun went down.
No matter
what I did or how hard I played I always seemed to have one more round left in
me.
Just like
that little pink bunny on the television commercials I’d just keep going and
going and going…
But admittedly
things are a little bit different now. Now-a-days it takes a little more effort
on my part to enjoy the boundless energy I remember from my earlier years.
Sometimes I
wake up exhausted from a full night’s sleep, other days I can’t seem to find
the energy to fit in my modest workout but the worst days of them all are when
I can’t even seem to muster up the strength to play with my kids.
It’s
upsetting to say the least – but what’s a man to do? Might as well just sit
back and roll with the punches right?
WRONG!!
Unfortunately
we’re all gown up now – and life doesn’t stop for any us. No matter how run
down or out of the game we might feel.
Not to
mention that fact that we only have a finite amount of days on this planet that
are ours to enjoy.
And I plan on
living each and every one of them to their absolute fullest – and I hope you
feel the exact same way.
With that
being said, the truth is low energy levels are something that can be easily
overcome with just a few simple strategies – and depending on your personal
situation maybe a few minor adjustments to your daily routine.
So today in
the spirit of partying all night and working all day I thought we’d discuss a
few techniques I like to use to re-charge my batteries on those days when I’d
just rather be watching T.V. in bed…
The Siberian Secret:
Siberian
Ginseng has been used for 1000’s of years to increase energy levels and sharpen
both physical and mental performance. And in

Get More Iron:
Often times
fatigue is directly related to low levels of iron in the blood stream. But by increasing
your iron intake you can help bolster both red blood cell counts and the amount
of oxygen that travels through your body which your body turns into energy.
There are
numerous nutritional supplements and multi-vitamins that can help you fill your
reserves – but my personal favorite is a good old fashioned breakfast of steak
and eggs.
The Power of Perfect Posture:
Good posture
is key to achieving maximum energy flow throughout
your entire body. If you find yourself slouching at your desk a bit try
standing up straight – imagine there’s a rope attached to the top of your head
connecting it to the ceiling. Make sure you keep your head up and your
shoulders back and you should feel an immediate improvement.
Take a “Super Shower”:
In my opinion
if you’re looking for a quick pick-me-up nothing works better than a “super
shower” as I like to call it. What I do is I start off by taking a nice hot
shower and when I’m ready to rinse off I turn the water to cold.
It’s a little
shocking at first but it works like a charm. The sudden change in temperature
stimulates the circulation of blood in your body allowing blood to penetrate
deeper into your body’s soft tissue. Just make sure you talk to your doctor
before trying this technique – because it’s a shocker.
Breathe:
Deep
breathing exercises increase oxygen intake to the entire body in turn
increasing energy levels. There are several different schools of thought on how
you should meditate. But the easiest way is to just sit comfortably with your
eyes closed and focus on breathing in deep through your nose and out through
your mouth. This will maximize your body’s intake of oxygen and flush out the
carbon dioxide quickly and efficiently.
Drink Up:
Staying
hydrated is great way to avoid a whole list of negative health issues and
fatigue is one of them. So try stashing a bottle of water at your workstation or
your car so you can sip on it throughout the day. It will help keep your gears
lubricated and your mind focused like a laser. Just remember I said water and
not coffee or soda!
Ditch the Morning Coffee:
But I should
warn you though that quitting cold turkey is going to be tough, so take it slow
and wean yourself off the caffeine over the course of a few weeks to avoid
withdrawals.
Eat Right – Eat Light:
Make it a
point to avoid heavy meals, especially during breakfast and lunch. If I can I
like to stretch my meals out to 6 a day instead of the traditional “Big 3”
breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you gorge yourself too early in the day it will
sit in your stomach like a rock for hours.
It’s also
imperative you make sure you’re eating the right foods. At the risk of sounding
like a broken record (even though it works for my mom) you are what you eat!
And eating junk food is the equivalent of putting water in your car’s gas tank.
Get Moving:
You knew I’d
bring it up eventually. But amazingly enough, exercise is one of the most
refreshing and energizing things you can do for your body – as long as you
don’t over do it that is. So if you have an hour for lunch today, spend half of
it taking a nice refreshing walk around the park. Before you know it you’ll be
ready to take on the world.

Nap Time:
A 15 or a 20
minute nap can do wonders for your energy reserves. So if you feel like calling
it quits, during your break today try closing the door to your office or
curling up under your desk and taking a quick nap. It’s just what the doctor
ordered to refresh and energize you for the rest of the day – just make sure
nobody sees you!
Early To Bed Early to Rise:
If you’re
trying to get by on 5 – 6 hours sleep a night it’s going to next to impossible
to kick that tired lazy feeling. Sleep is without a doubt the single most
important factor for maintaining peak energy levels.
Active adults
require at least 8 hours sleep a night to recharge their batteries, repair body
tissue and to produce the healthy amounts of vital hormones. And if you’re not
getting up in the morning without the help of an alarm clock, you’re simply not
getting enough.
I recommend
you start going to bed about 15 minutes earlier every night until you start
waking up without your alarm. You’ll notice right away you feel better and more
energized throughout the day and so will everyone else around you.
Remember
there’s a lot more at stake here than just feeling better for the sake of
feeling better.
If you’re
looking to impress your boss and set yourself up for that next big promotion
you can’t be moping around the office dragging your butt all day long.
And come on,
you don’t want to be thought of as the grumpy old Grandpa that just sits around
and watches T.V. whenever the little ones drop by for a visit do you?
But it needs
your help to do it.
Just remember
you’re a machine, Mother Nature’s finest work. And it’s up to you if you’re
going to be a high performance model or an old run down beater.
Stay Healthy!
