15 Simple Steps to Having the Happiest Year
Ever
--Louis Hart
Well, the holidays are over the presents are all unwrapped and the credit
card bills are starting to roll in.
And as we step into the New Year I’m sure a lot of you out there
have a whole list of resolutions you’re just dying to get started
on.
So today I wanted to take a step back and focus on one very important goal
I might have over looked in my series on New Years resolutions.
That’s simply being Happy. No matter what your goals for the New
Year might be at the end of the day they all share one very simple common
denominator. You want to be happier.
Quitting smoking, getting back to your ideal weight, having the best sex
ever even the notion of eating healthier all offer the same end result.
That is – if you can accomplish those tasks you’ll become a
happier person in the process.
With that in mind, today I thought I’d run down a quick list of tricks
you can use to banish bad feelings and bring the simple pleasure of life
back to the forefront of your mind.
Because stress is a killer my friend - but fortunately, happiness is the
cure. And it’s really not all that hard to come by.
You don’t need to accomplish all your lofty goals or even make all
your resolutions a reality to be truly happy and stress free. So here we
go…
15 Tips to Help You Banish the Blues and Live Happier in 2007:
1) Focus – you can only do one thing at a time effectively, so this
year try to cut back on the multi-tasking. It doesn’t matter what
you’re doing, focus on the task at hand and relish in the fact that
you’re getting it done and done right. A recent study conducted by
Duke University actually found that people who multi-task are more likely
to suffer from high blood pressure.

2) Whistle while you work – music does a lot more than just soothe
the savage beast. Studies have shown that music stimulates the part of
the brain that makes us happy. So the next time you’re neck deep
in something you’d rather not be doing turn on a little music – and
if there’s no radio around then just take my advice and whistle.
3) Live in the here and now – don’t worry about unpaid bills
or the fact that your in-laws are coming to stay with you for a month.
Live in the moment and deal with the problems you can’t fix when
their time comes.
4) Smells so sweet – research has shown us that the soothing benefits
of aromatherapy are the real deal. So next time you’re out try grabbing
a few sweet smelling candles or maybe even one of those plug in air fresheners – and
just sit back and smile.
5) Lose touch – even if only for a week. If you’re anything
like my Aunt M. watching the news makes her blood boil. So if the stress
of life is feeling like it might drive you insane try tuning out for a
week – ignore the daily paper and skip the evening news for a while
and use that time to do something that makes you happy.
6) Bust a gut – laughing that is. Laughing releases pleasure inducing
endorphins and lowers your body’s production of the hormones that
cause you stress. So make it a point to watch funny movies or maybe now
since you’re skipping the news portion of your paper you can use
that time to read the comics. And when something is funny don’t be
afraid to laugh out loud.
7) NO – it’s one of the easiest words to pronounce. Typically
it’s one of the first words a child learns but so many of us have
a problem saying it to others when they ask us for something. Well don’t – if
you don’t have time to help your brother–in-law move or drive
him to the air port just tell him, “No I’d love to help but
I just don’t have time this week” if they’re really your
friend they’ll understand.
8) Walk your dog – there are numerous studies that point to the stress
relieving benefits of having pets. Couple that with a nice brisk walk around
the neighborhood with mans best friend and you have a sure fire recipe
for instant happiness.
9) Exercise – its better for relieving stress than any drug man has
ever invented. When you exercise vigorously your body releases pleasure
inducing endorphins that can have an amazing up-lifting effect on your
mood.
10) Sex – even though its number ten on my count down good old sex
is first in all of our hearts. There’s nothing like an energetic
round of sex to put a smile on your face and make everything seem right
in the world. And the best part is you get to put a smile on someone else’s
face in the process!

11) That’s what friends are for – to make our days brighter
and our lives easier. So make sure to give priority to the people in your
life that make you truly happy. A recent study conducted on both men and
women found that the participants that had a good group of supportive friends
in their corner were more likely to have lower blood pressure, cholesterol
levels, and blood sugar.
12) The spiritual side – church is a great place to go to find your
center when the trials of life start dragging you down. It good for the
soul to remind yourself from time to time that the world needs you in it
- and if you’re not an overly religious person try finding solace
in a park or a museum or any place quiet that appeals to you.
13) Get involved – you can volunteer at your local hospital, church
or any local charity. Helping those less fortunate than you not only feels
great – but it’s also a good reminder that sometimes our own
problems aren’t nearly as bad as they might seem.
14) Keep it clean – my Jiu-Jitsu instructor always used to stress
the importance of a clean house for a calm soul. And he was right – it’s
almost impossible to truly relax when your house is in shambles, none of
your socks match and there’s a stack of newspapers from floor to
ceiling sitting in the garage. So clean it up – cleaning in of itself
is very therapeutic but on top of that the satisfaction of living in a
clean orderly house will put a smile on your face from ear to ear.
15) Always give thanks – so you’ve tried every trick in the
book and you just can’t seem to get happy no matter how hard you
try. We’ve all had one of those days. But no matter how bad things
get – no matter how much stress is piled on you, you have a lot to
be thankful for.
So if even if you’re having the worst day ever – take time
everyday to remind yourself of all the things you have to be thankful for.
I know it sounds like a speech from your mom but trust me it works.
If you actually sat down and put pen to paper you’d realize you have
a lot of things in this world to be grateful for – friends, family,
your health and you’ve always got me in your corner.
Try a few of these tips out for yourself and you’ll see. I bet you’ll
be smiling before you even know what hit you.
Stay Healthy!
