Sex and chocolate – two of life’s finer pleasures. And I don’t
know about you personally but for my tastes chocolate has always come in

Trick or Treat – More Big News About Chocolate

That’s right guys I’ve got more big news about chocolate boys
and girls – and just in time for Halloween too!
Because as it turns out everybody’s favorite Halloween treat, chocolate
(dark chocolate – not white or milk chocolate) doesn’t just
taste great but it’s good for you too -- and in more ways than one!
Clinical research now shows us that the flavonoids found in dark chocolate
not only raise HDL cholesterol levels (the good cholesterol) but also acts
as a super potent anti-oxidant protecting healthy cells from free radical
damage!
Flavonoids occur naturally in most plant based foods and provide protection
against environmental toxins and cell/tissue damage. And new research suggests
these same flavonoids may actually have some beneficial effect on your
cardiovascular health too.
Researchers at the University of L’Aquila in Italy recently conducted
a study on the effects of dark chocolate on hypertension (high blood pressure)
and what they found was pretty impressive.
The participants in the study all had a systolic blood pressure reading
between 140 and 159 and a diastolic blood pressure scores between 90 and
99. None of the participants were on blood pressure medication of any kind –and
were free of diabetes and other diseases.
After a 1 week period where subjects didn’t consume any chocolate
-- participants in group A were given 3.5 ounces of white chocolate to
consume daily (has all the same ingredients as dark chocolate without the
flavonoids). While participants in group B were fed 3.5 ounces of dark
chocolate daily.
The results after just 15 days of testing was a 12 mm HG (millimeters of
mercury) decrease in systolic blood pressure levels and a 9 mm HG (millimeters
of mercury) decrease in diastolic levels in the dark chocolate group.
However, there were no changes noted in the white chocolate control group.
A pretty impressive comparison – especially considering the length
of the study (just 15 days).
Most health experts would agree that foods rich in flavonoids should be
an integral part of a healthy balanced diet. And now along with cranberries,
apples and onions – we can add good old dark chocolate to the list.
Just remember – make sure your getting dark chocolate not milk chocolate
or white chocolate. Neither has any of the free radical fighting anti-oxidants
of the dark variety.
Not to mention milk chocolate is loaded with sugar and saturated fat. A
double whammy -- so make sure you’re buying the dark stuff. Those
little trick-or-treaters won’t even notice the difference.
