The Flu – Know Your Enemy
-Louis Hart
With cold and flu season officially in full swing (1st week of October)
I thought today would be the perfect time to discuss some very important
facts about this highly contagious, sometimes fatal virus.
Because knowledge is power and armed with the right information – we
should have no problems getting through another season unscathed.
The flu or influenza is a highly contagious infection of the upper respiratory
system caused by a number of flu viruses. These viruses enter your body
through your mucous membranes in the ears, nose or mouth.
And once inside, the virus can settle in your ear, nose, throat and lungs
causing a number of violent symptoms. These symptoms can include everything
from congestion, pain, coughing, and fever…even death!
In 1918 the Spanish Flu epidemic ran roughshod across the globe killing
almost 20 million people world wide! It’s still the mile stone by
which all pandemics are measured, even today.
And if you believe media hype, we could be in store for yet another – this
time in the form of a mutated strain of bird flu. And even though human
infection is still quite rare – the mortality rate is dangerously
high.

So take 2 minutes and read up on these 7 “must know” flu facts
-- and you’ll see exactly why you need to take precautions now and
exactly which precautions you should be taking to safeguard your health
from these potentially fatal, yet avoidable viruses…
1) Sick Days:
About 10% to 20% of the U.S. population gets the flu every year. And more
than 200,000 of those infected have to receive medical attention for their
symptoms. The flu can last for up to a week sometimes longer and that can
take a serious bite out of your paid sick leave.
Even worse, influenza claims about 36,000 American lives annually. So please
don’t confuse the symptoms of the flu with that of a common cold.
It’s difficult to tell the difference – but usually people
infected with a common cold won’t run a high fever or suffer from
headaches or extreme exhaustion.
So if you’re feeling under the weather you should really talk to
your doctor just to be safe.
2) Quarantine:
The influenza virus is easily transmitted through kisses and handshakes
or through most any person to person contact. And a powerful sneeze can
send the virus soaring up to 10 feet or more. So stay away from anybody
you suspect may be infected.
3) Like Mom Always Said:
Wash your hands every chance you get. It’s the best way I know of
to keep the flu virus from mounting a full on invasion of your body. The
easiest way for the flu to enter your body is through your eyes, nose or
mouth.
So always keep your hands as clean as possible and try and not to touch
your face if you can avoid it. And for goodness sakes, NO nail biting – it’s
like eating raw germs!
4) Tough Little Buggers:
The flu virus is very resilient and can live on hard surfaces like telephone
receivers, counter tops, computer key boards, door knobs and light switches
for up to 72 hours. And even after that time you can still get sick just
from coming into contact with the dead virus particles.
So I’ll say it again, wash your hands constantly and it’s not
a bad idea to keep a bottle of hand sanitizer or moist toilettes on hand
just in case.
5) Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket:
Experts recommend getting a flu shot once a year to prevent seasonal outbreaks.
But I’m still a little skeptical about the effectiveness of these
vaccines. I’ve yet to come across a study that has convinced me hands
down of their value – and even proponents of the vaccine say they’re
only about 60% effective at best.
So don’t think just because you’ve had your shot you’re
out of the woods just yet.

6) Timing Isn’t Everything:
Even though peak flu season starts in early October – influenza is
a year round epidemic. So you have to stay vigilant all year long. A month
in bed will certainly throw a wrench into your life – no work, no
play, no sex -- no nothing. Just hot chicken soup!
7) Your Best Defense:
Without a doubt the best way to prevent the flu from grabbing hold of you
is a strong, healthy functioning immune system. By ramping up your immune
system to full bore you lessen your chances of ever having the flu. And
if you do happen to get the flu a healthy immune system will ease the symptoms
and speed up your recovery better than anything your doctor can prescribe.
And the best tools for the job are the vitamins and nutrients found in
fresh veggies. They’re exactly what your body needs to super charge
your immune system and fight off most any stubborn virus.
The dark leafy varieties work best – they’re overflowing with
vitamins and anti-oxidants. 4 – 6 servings a day is all it takes
to keep your immune system running at maximum efficiency. And if you own
a juicer like I do you can get all 6 servings in one quick glass!
I also recommend supplementing with a high end multi vitamin http://www.bestlife-herbals.com/promos/-VIT01.html to make sure your body is getting everything it needs to fight off the
nastiest of infections.
Exercise, fresh air, and a stress free lifestyle are all very helpful too – but
I’ll talk about that a little more in depth later on in the week.
And in the mean time stay vigilant - you don’t want to be stuck in
bed while all the other kids are out having fun do you?
Stay Healthy!
